EN124:2015 Load Classes

Our covers are compatible with EN124:2015, ASTM and AS standards.

The Standard

What EN 124:2015 defines

EN 124:2015 is the European standard for gully tops and manhole tops for vehicular and pedestrian areas. It defines load classes by the minimum test force the complete unit (cover + frame) must withstand.

ClassTest force (kN)Typical location (per EN 124:2015)
A 1515Footways, pedestrian areas, car parks
B 125125Kerbside channels of roads, parking areas for all vehicle types
C 250250Gully tops in road channels, up to 250 mm from kerb
D 400400Carriageways of roads, hard shoulders, parking areas for heavy vehicles
E 600600Docks, aircraft pavements
F 900900Areas imposing particularly high wheel loads (e.g. aircraft pavements)

Class letters above follow EN 124:2015. In the NEXUS catalogue the load class column uses the short form A / B / C / D - i.e. classes A 15 to D 400. Our moulded range currently covers classes A to D; E 600 / F 900 units are typically ductile iron territory.

Choosing a class

Match the class to the real traffic

01

Identify the location

Footway, kerbside, carriageway or industrial hardstanding - the location, not the cover size, decides the class.

02

Check wheel path

Covers closer to the traffic lane sit in a higher class. A cover 250 mm from the kerb and one in the wheel path are different jobs.
